History

The long history of Las Anitas dates back to the beginning of the century, and came from the hand of Don José Alfonso, a Spanish immigrant from the Province of León, Spain, who, at the age of 16, came to settle in these lands in 1902. . The first bellies were acquired from the staff of Don Alberto Puig's cabin, In whose improvement, breeders from England were used, for the most part, and some of the main ranches from Uruguay. From its beginnings, genetic selection involved arduous work and, above all, great responsibility.

This is how the person who carried out the first sales of the establishment understood it, in that first annual auction in 1938, and this is how those of us who are in charge of the business understand it today.
Located in the center of the country, in the Feliciano area, Durazno, Cabaña Las Anitas has been selecting the best blood streams for more than 80 years, becoming one of the most important genetic resources in the region.

Currently the company develops the three most important activities in the agricultural sector: Agriculture, Livestock and Forestry. In addition, there is a corral where different categories are strategically supplemented and the steers are fattened.

The main crops are soybeans, corn, sorghum, mainly for silage, rapeseed and barley. Regarding the forages and varieties used for livestock rotation, we work with: oats, ryegrass, fescue, lotus, clover and alfalfa.

In the livestock part, we work on a commercial herd of Hereford cows, a productive base for the steers and cows that are sent to the industry every year. The genetic program has 350 Hereford and Polled Hereford bellies that make up the pedigree stock and another 100 that make up the pure origin stock. Around 100 bulls and 170 bellies are sold at the “Los Toros de Alfonso” Annual Auction.

All of these breeders comply with the selection premises that the Cabaña has always had: ease of calving, maternal ability, fertility, good muscular coats strengthened in the hindquarters, pigment, skin and easy fattening. In short: functionality and adaptation to the environment.

Furthermore, we can proudly affirm that Las Anitas breeding stock is the product of a fair combination between what EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) are today and an irreplaceable visual appreciation. Objective information has been a complement to the selection since the 90s, and allows us to have support for the decisions made.

It is with great enthusiasm and passion that we pour out our 80 years of genetic selection, sharing our breeding philosophy, which has placed us at the forefront in the provision of sires and wombs, both for pedigree stock and for general herds.

In 2022, the cabin obtained, with “Tormenta”, the Hereford Grand Champion, which brings our count of Grand Champions to 29, in an exhibition that has been attended since 1980.
